Gaza, three MiniDV tapes recently remerged showcasing life in the strip from 2001. What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989 turns into an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown.
To what extent can the real and figural materiality of an image become an abstraction or, potentially more, a spectrum? The question evokes both aesthetic and ethical problems which converge towards a territory as real as it is abstract and phantasmagorical: Palestine.
This is the inquiry of Kamal Aljafari with Hasan in Gaza, a striking reflection on memory, loss, and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza and lives that may have disappeared forever.
Kamal Aljafari is a Palestinian filmmaker and artist. His films have screened at major festivals and museums, including Locarno, London, Viennale, and the 35th Bienal de São Paulo Currently a fellow at Columbia University’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination, he is developing “Beirut 1931,” a fiction film to be shot in Jaffa.
