GENDER TROUBLE!

"Gender Trouble" is curated by director, producer and cinephile Antony Voronov, a Russian genderqueer refugee. In the country he left, films like these are now classified as extremist materials under the law.

During the evening we explore questions around sex and gender identity, sparked by three films from the 1910s. Have attitudes to gender really changed that much? How were non-conforming gender expression and behaviour represented in film a century ago, and how does that compare to now?

Algie the Miner (fragment)by Harry Schenck, Edward Warren and Alice Guy1912, USA, 10 minutes, silent with English titlesAlgie the Miner works with the "sissy" character popular at the time: a feminine man who, after a spell in the Wild West, takes on more conventionally masculine traits. Some critics read the sissy as a gay-coded figure. Is that what we see on screen here, or is sexuality being confused with gender expression? We’re curious about your reading.

The Florida Enchantment (fragments)by Sidney Drew1914, USA, 60 minutes, silent with English titlesProbably one of the earliest films to address what we would now call transgender experience. The seeds that change a person’s sex are nowadays easy to read as an allusion to hormone therapy, which came much later.

I Don’t Want to Be a Man (full film)by Ernst Lubitsch1918, Germany, 45 minutes, silent with German titles and English subtitlesLubitsch’s film is about women’s agency, gender curiosity and cross-dressing. The title sounds like a conclusion, but what comes before it is a young woman trying out a man’s role and finding out what it gives her.

We take these films as open works, where meaning comes out of the encounter between the film and whoever is watching. There are no right or wrong readings, and yours will shape the evening as much as anything on screen.

You don’t need to know anything about 1910s cinema, or to have seen a silent film before. Each film gets a short introduction with historical context, and after each screening there’s time to talk about how they land today.

Tijdens deze avond onderzoeken we vragen rond sekse en genderidentiteit, aan de hand van drie films uit de jaren tien van de vorige eeuw. Zijn de opvattingen over gender werkelijk zo veranderd? Hoe werden gendernonconform gedrag en genderexpressie een eeuw geleden in film verbeeld, en hoe verhoudt zich dat tot het heden?
